Henri Fayol’s management theory is a simple model of how managers interact with personnel. Although some aspects may be considered outdated for the modern workplace, other principles in Fayol’s management theory remain relevant to a wide range of businesses today.

Fayol is known as the “father of modern management” because his theory tasked leaders with setting the tone for the rest of the organization. Fayol believed managers should interact with personnel in five basic ways to control and plan production:

The work in an organization must be divided among individuals and departments. Division of work leads to specialization. It results in accuracy, speed and neatness in work. Specialization also leads to innovation.
Henri Fayol advocated division of work, because every change of work requires adaptation or adjustment which reduces output. However, division of work has it own limits which should not be exceeded.

Henri Fayol (1841 – 1925) was a French coal-mine engineer, director of mines and modern management theoretician. Who is Henri Fayol? His biography
Fayol was born in a suburb of Istanbul, Turkey in 1841. His father, an engineer, was appointed building supervisor for the construction of a bridge over the Golden Horn (Galata Bridge). The family returned to France in 1847. He studied mining engineering at the ‘École Nationale Superieure des Mines’ academy in Saint-Étienne.
