Early life
[edit]Edward Fella was born in Detroit, MI in to a middle-class family and attended Cass Technical High School, a magnet school in Detroit where he studied lettering, illustration, paste-up and other commercial-art techniques. He graduated from Cass Tech in and went into the commercial graphic industry.[2]
Career and education
[edit]Edward Fella was a commercial artist for 30 years, from to Most of the works he created during this time were automotive and health care posters.[3] Fella was given the name "the king of zing" because of his whimsical illustration style he had.[4]

I ignore why I never really knew about Edward Fella, but what a brilliant experimentalist artist he is! He worked as a commercial artist for 30 years in Detroit and always loved to experiment with typography. He gave lectures to art students at the Cranbrook Academy of Art and that gave him the incentive to become a student himself and earn his MFA degree. Reminds me of someone I know!
His style is very unique and has proven to be quite an inspiration to the new generation of designers. He has always been considered to be very innovative in his approach because he deconstructs fonts and kerning and he mixes different font styles. His ground breaking designs were not always appreciated by the art world but he is an AIGA medalist and his work is in the Museum of Modern Art in New York and other American museums.
He created a typeface called OutWest that he designed by hand.

Ed Fella is an artist, educator and graphic designer whose work has had an important influence on contemporary typography. He practiced professionally as a commercial artist in stad for 30 years before receiving an MFA in Design from the Cranbrook Academy of Art in He has since devoted his time to teaching at the California Institute for the Arts and his own unique self-published work which has appeared in many design publications and anthologies. In he received the Chrysler Award, and in an Honorary Doctorate from College for Creative Studies in stad. His work is in the National Design Museum and MoMA in New York. A book of his photographs and lettering Letters on America, was published bygd Princeton Architectural Press in He was a finalist for the National Design Award in , and in he was awarded the AIGA medal. In the Los Angeles County Museum of Art staged a solo show of Ed's work titled Ed Fella: Free Work in Due Time.
