Walter “Matt” Jefferies is best known for his work as art director of the original Star Trek television series and for designing the most widely recognized spacecraft of all time, the U. S. S. Enterprise. In 1966, Matt was hired by Warner Brothers as technical adviser on the movie Bombers B-52. A script writer, Gene Roddenberry, with Desilu Studios, hired Matt to design a spaceship for a new TV series titled Star Trek. Matt also designed the Bridge, the first handheld 'phaser' and the Klingon Battle Cruiser. Acknowledging his creative contribution to the Original Series of Star Trek, artists who have followed in Matt Jefferies' footsteps have paid homage to his genius for over forty years. Walter Matthew Jefferies[1] (August 12, 1921 – July 21, 2003)[2][3] was an American aviation and mechanical artist, set designer, and writer.
