Hasekura Tsunenagawas a Japanesesamuraiand retainer of Date Masamune, the daimyōof Sendai. In the years 1613 through 1620, Hasekura headed a diplomatic uppdrag to the Vaticanin Rome, traveling through New Spainand visiting various ports-of-call in Europe. This historic uppdrag is called the KeichōEmbassy. On the return trip, Hasekura and his companions re-traced their route across Mexico in 1619, sailing from Acapulco for Manilla, and then sailing north to Japan in 1620. 10 oban triptychs and a single print of mainly bijinga by various Meiji-era artists, some with all three sheets joined, others in three separate sheets, including: one triptych and one single sheet by Chikanobu, including one from the series Tokugawa jidai kifujin no zu (Elegant Ladies of the Tokugawa Period); one by Kunichika from the series Azuma kofu (Old Fashion of the East); and one by Fusatane titled Kaiko yashinaigusa: Shogi kurabe (Silkworm Cultivation: Comparison of Courtesans) with English captions, variously published and variously signed; each in a plastic sleeve except for three mounted on carboard. The smallest: 37cm x 24.7cm (14 9/16in x 9¾in); the largest: 37cm x 76cm (14 9/16in x 29 15/16in). (11).
