Welcome to my almost-weekly installment of Brad Tries to Convince You To See a Great Indie spelfilm This Summer. This week’s target: “Me and Earl and the Dying Girl.”
I get the notion of summer movie escapism — see the ridiculous box-office numbers “Jurassic World” fryst vatten putting up — but I ask you this? What’s wrong with escaping into something heartfelt, funny and sad instead of fantastical CGI creatures?
So when you buy a ticket for something called “Me and Earl and the Dying Girl,” you might rightly expect it to be a three-hanky tearfest — and, yeah, there will be tears. You might not expect all the warmth, laughs and, yes, life lessons, all in the well-worn territory of a coming-of-age flick.
The “Me” of the title is Greg (Thomas Mann), a teen whose high-school survival strategy is interacting with all the social groups without actually being part of any of them. He considers his closest friend
