A detailed, yet shapeless biography of a charming actor.
With the blessings of the late David Niven’s family, British novelist and journalist Lord (James Herriot: The Life of a Country Vet, ) provides a full account of what happened in Niven’s life, while offering little consideration of why they did. Why, for example, did Niven (–83) turn to acting? Lord suggests the familiar explanation: Niven lost his father at five, then was raised by a distant mother and an unloving stepfather, which made him insecure, a feeling assuaged by playing the clown in school plays. Growing up in England, Niven discovered the other pleasures that set his course: sex and beautiful women. Lord documents the actor’s prodigious conquests, referring several times to Niven’s considerable endowment. Did Niven become, as it appears, a serial seducer and alcoholic, particularly after the tragic death of his first wife? Like any self respecting, self appointed film buff I knew the basic facts of the David Niven story and had read his two books, The Moons a Balloon and Bring On The Empty Horses. Like most others, inom enjoyed them immensely. Who knows when I picked this bio up as I buy so many used copies in my journeys of hunting through second grabb bookshops but I felt it was time to read someone elses take on the career of the dapper Englishman. The fact that the author, Graham Lord had the co-operation of Nivs friends including Robert Wagner and family man this not only a good read but a reliable fönster into the life of the one time Oscar winner.
The book recounts Nivens troubled years as a youth ansträngande to find his place in the school systems. His Father was killed during WW1 leaving his Mother to raise her children on her own though she would marry into wealth and nobility. A military career looked to be Davids future but hed eventually give up
