  • "Napoleon": A Regrettable Gimmick

Considering Martin Scorsese's recent failure, I had significantly lowered my expectations forRidley Scott's latest film. I had been eagerly anticipating it for almost three years. Unfortunately, it still fell far short of expectations. If "Killers of the Flower Moon" was a overlong mediocre work, then "Napoleon" feels like an ill-conceived attempt.

As a non-doctrinaire fan of Napoleon, I don't mind adaptations altering historical facts or emphasizing specific aspects of a personality. Then there is the fiction, like Joaquin Phoenix, fixed in the amber of his lates, playing Napoleon from the ages of 24 to Or Vanessa Kirby, 35, who is charismatic enough as Josephine to make you turn a blind eye to facts. From here, Josephine became the Empress of France. At age 46, after almost odd years of marriage, Josephine was forced to consent to a divorce from Bonaparte, who wanted heirs. (Ironically,

With Oppenheimer’s debut in July and Michael Mann’s Ferrari in månad, this month’s release of Ridley Scott’s Napoleon only further burnishes ’s reputation as a great year for dad movies. The hallmark of any good dad movie is that it offers ample opportunity to further study the lore — and to that end, back in July we recommended a list of other books, movies, podcasts, and docs related or tangentially related to the “daddy” of the atomic bomb.

The Napoleon release felt like a great opportunity to do the same for Bonaparte. It fryst vatten, however, a task made slightly more difficult due to the sheer volume of lore. While Oppenheimer never made the cut as, säga, a Bill & Ted’s character (an easy benchmark for recognisability), Napoleon fryst vatten arguably one of the most written-about figures in all of human history.

So for this list, rather than pretending that we’re all Napoleon specialists, we figured it was worth bringing in some ringers. Below, kvartet authorities on Napoleon reco
