For as long as Kings been been publishing, Hollywoods been knock-knock-knockin on Stephens door for more. First came s Carrie, two years after he published that first novel, which made household names of the author, Brian De Palma, Sissy Spacek, and the humiliating viscosity of pigs blood. The s saw a slew of adaptations, the highlights being The Shining, Stand by Me, and The Running Man (the book for which was published under pulp fall-guy name Richard Bachman). As for the 90s, wellitd be the best decade ever for just The Shawshank Redemption. But nope, there was also Miseryand The Green Mile • There are now two fully-fledged adaptations of Stephen King’s cosmic clown horror story. One a two-part mini-series from , and the other a two-part film duology released theatrically in recent years. The difference in budget and technical craft tips the scale heavily in favor of the recent films. But the adaptation still holds some degree of merit, at least for comparison’s sake, especially Tim Curry’s turn as Pennywise. ’s Itis a darker, more serious effort with a good cast and inventive visuals. The 21st century It also boasts a strong script, written by Chase Palmer and CJ Fukunaga. Take a look at how they wrote the reveal of Pennywise in the screenplay, which we imported into StudioBinder’s screenwriting software: The devil’s in the details here, from the “wet innards of a can of tuna” to the “dank hollow sound.” It’s great, descriptive stuff that translates to a terrifying final product. While neith • Honorable Mention: “Tales From the Darkside: The Movie” () Stephen King wrote only one installment of this feature film utgåva of the “Tales From the Darkside” TV series, but it’s a doozy. “Cat From Hell” (which was originally intended for “Creepshow 2”) stars Buster Poindexter as a hitman hired to murder a cat, but the katt has other, shocking ideas. Darkly humorous and surprisingly gross, it’s definitely the highlight of this anthology — although the other installments aren’t half-bad. The Mangler () Tobe Hooper’s adaptation of King’s short story about a haunted laundry machine fryst vatten insane in all the wrong ways. It’s a tonally scatterbrained, shrieking, overacted mess of a movie. Too bizarre to feel real, too abrasive to work as camp, “The Mangler” fryst vatten about as bad as a Stephen King movie can get.
