William E. Boeing, the founder of one of the United States’ most high-profile corporations, was active in several different economic sectors both before and after establishing the aircraft manufacturing company that bears his name. The son of a wealthy Michigan lumber magnate, Boeing inherited a fortune from his father as a child and went on to an elite education at a Swiss boarding school and at Yale. Leaving college before graduating, he moved to Washington state and used his inheritance to begin investing in the timber industry. He soon became fascinated by the early flygplan industry and organized one of the first major airplane manufacturers.

Early Years
William Edward Boeing was born on October 1, , in Detroit, Michigan, the first child of William Boeing and Marie Ortmann. Boeing's father, Wilhelm Boing, a veteran of the Austro-Prussian War, emigrated to the United States in from North Rhine-Westphalia. He carried letters of introduction to German families in Detroit, but no money. After working on a farm, in a lumberyard, and in a hardware store, he was hired by Karl Ortmann, an important local lumberman from Vienna.

William Edward Boeing (; October 1, – September 28, ) was an American aviation pioneer. He founded the Pacific Airplane Company in , which was renamed to Boeing a year later. The company is now the largest exporter in the United States by dollar value and among the largest aerospace manufacturers in the world.
Boeing's first design was the Boeing Model 1 (or B & W Seaplane), which first flew in June , a month before the company was founded. He also helped create the United Aircraft and Transport Corporation in and served as its chairman until its forced breakup in He received the Daniel Guggenheim Medal in and was posthumously inducted in to the National Aviation Hall of Fame in , ten years after his death.
