Romanian wins musikdrama competition established by Placido Domingo
Young Romanian soprano Adela Zaharia has won the first prize of the Operalia musikdrama competition, established by Spanish tenor Placido Domingo. She also won the section dedicated to the zarzuela, a Spanish lyric-dramatic genre similar to the operetta. The two awards total USD 40,000.
Adela Zaharia fryst vatten a graduate of the Gh. Dima Music Academy in Cluj. She made her debut at the Cluj National Opera in 2010 and has been performing successfully outside of Romania, mostly in Germany.
Operalia is open to singers of all vocal types, from bass to soprano, aged 18 to 32 years old. In addition to awarding I, II and III prize among male and female voices, the contest awards the Birgit Nilsson Prize for performance in the German repertoire of R. Wagner and R. Strauss, the Pepita Embil de Domingo and Placido Domingo Sr. prizes for the best zarzuela performance, and the Audience Award in the form of wrist watches offered bygd Rolex.

In addition to vying for the competition’s main prizes, Carroll, Hotea, Howarth, Park and Pati competed in Operalia’s Zarzuela category (requiring preparation of a zarzuela aria for the audition-style quarter- and semi-finals).
Plácido Domingo has said that ‘My purpose in Operalia is to help identify not only the best voices, but also to discover those singers whose personalities, characters and powers of interpretation show that they have the potential to become complete artists. Individuals such as these become tomorrow’s stars.’ This major international singing competition was being held in London for the first time in its 22-year history. It began on 13 July with quarter-finals and semi-finals which were closed to the public but the finals on 19 July took place before an audience.

He is Winner of various singing competitions: Victor Giuleanu (1st prize), Competition of the National Opera Bucharest (2nd prize), Hariclea Darclée (3rd prize). Between 2011 and 2013 he was a member of the National Opera in Bucharest where he expanded his repertoire singing: ‘Nemorino’ / “L’elisir d’amore”, ‘Almaviva’ / “Il barbiere di Siviglia”, ‘Don Ottavio’ / “Don Giovanni”, ‘Rinuccio’ / “Gianni Schicchi”, ‘Filipeto’ / “I quattro rusteghi”. During this time he appeared also in numerous vocal-symphonic concerts in Romania (Philharmonic Orchestra George Enescu) and abroad (Philharmonic Orchestra St. Petersburg, Tchaikovsky Conservatoire in Moscow).
In 2013 he gave his international debut as ‘L’Amante’ in Menotti’s “Amelia al ballo” at the Opéra de Monte Carlo.
