    Hearst Castle, known

    William Randolph Hearst inherited his land from his parents. Using his own money, Hearst continued to accumulate land until his property reached around , acres by He decided to build a grand house on the land and hired architect Julia Morgan in to help him create his dream estate. Over the next 28 years, the pair built up the property and buildings, which took on the exterior look of the Spanish structures Hearst had seen and loved while traveling through Europe.

    Called La Cuesta Encantada, or the Enchanted Hill, each of the over a hundred rooms in the main house, plus guest houses and additional buildings, had different designs. The 58 bedrooms, 60 bathrooms, and 41 fireplaces contained European furnishings, including ceilings, tiles, and other architecture, as well as thousands of antiques Hearst collected. The castle also housed the largest privately owned art collection by a single person.
