NY arm-wrestling pros star in over-the-top ‘Game of Arms’
Reality TV has brought us shows about some fairly obscure competitions — beard-growing, cosplay, dog grooming.
Now, get ready for competitive arm wrestling.
“Game of Arms,” premiering Tuesday (10 p.m. on AMC), looks inside the highly competitive sport, following five regional arm-wrestling clubs, including New York City’s Arms Control (Other city clubs participating are Erie, Pa.; Sacramento, Calif.; Baton Rouge, La.; and Kansas City, Mo.).
For the men profiled in the show — who have regular day jobs like a high school chemistry teacher, art director and firefighter — the TV series is a chance to raise the profile of their sport, one that usually gets a laugh from strangers.
“They look like they ate a lemon,” says Arms Control founder Dan Fortuna, 48, on the typical reaction to his hobby. “ ‘That’s a real sport?’ Once you explain that, yeah, it is a sport, and a little more about it, they seem interested.

Minnesota Armwrestling Hall of Fame:
Richard "The Minnesota Man of Muscle" Lupkes, weighing over 300 lbs. this man won Worlds in 1988 and 1989, has beaten John Brzenk at least 3 times, has wins on Gary Goodridge, and is globally recognized as one of the very best armwrestlers of all time. Around 1991 he left armwrestling and returned in 2007 at the age of 50. 3 months after his return he beat Travis Bagent, and 4 months after that he beat John Brzenk. Is he the only man in his 50's who has ever beaten John Brzenk (while John was still in his 40's)? John says about Richard Lupkes "Your explosive power was the most incredible and sometimes scary example of pure power I have ever felt. Your size and strength to say the least always made me a little nervous." Lupkes won World's again in the Grand Masters Class in 2010, and at that time he was ranked number 7 in the World at 54 years of age.
